Durant l’été 2015, l’auteure a réalisé une longue marche depuis le site de Nauzenac en Haute-Corrèze jusqu’à celui d’Ubaye dans les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, deux villages engloutis sous les eaux des retenues des grands barrages de l’Aigle et de Serre-Ponçon. Pendant un mois et demi, Carolina E. Santo a parcouru plus de 600 kilomètres à pied pour s’immerger pleinement, par la marche, dans le paysage environnant. Chemin faisant, elle a photographié le paysage et a écouté la centaine de témoignages enregistrés dans la vallée de la Dordogne par l’anthropologue Armelle Faure, afin de comprendre la vie de ces femmes, de ces hommes et de ces enfants qui ont grandi dans cette vallée où cinq barrages construits entre 1932 et 1957 ont submergé de nombreux bourgs et déplacé des centaines de familles.

Liés par leur destin, les deux villages partagent encore une coïncidence. Les anciens de Nauzenac et les anciens d’Ubaye se réunissent tous les 22 juillet au bord des retenues d’eau, à l’emplacement le plus proche de leur village submergé, pour célébrer Marie-Madeleine, sainte patronne des deux villages dont les chapelles furent également inondées lors de la mise en eau des barrages en 1945 et 1960.

Pour honorer cette occurrence votive, lier les destins des habitants d’ici et de là-bas, dont le sort a été commun, l’auteure, tout en marchant, en inscrivant son corps dans les paysages traversés, a porté la mémoire des anciens de la vallée de la Dordogne à ceux de la vallée de l’Ubaye. Dans l’exercice quotidien d’une écoute marchée, elle notait dans un carnet les passages des archives orales qui la marquaient, ainsi que les apparitions provoquées par la rencontre entre les paysages parcourus et les histoires entendues. Une fois arrivée en Ubaye, elle a offert ses écrits aux habitants.

Ce livre retrace l’expérimentation d’une territorialisation sensible, qui, par la relation intime tissée entre la mémoire, l’espace et la marche, a donné corps à la parole des anciens habitants des lieux, l’inscrivant ainsi dans le paysage traversé.

During the summer of 2015, the author undertook a long walk from Nauzenac in Haute-Corrèze to Ubaye in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, two villages submerged under the waters of the large Aigle and Serre-Ponçon dams. For a month and a half, Carolina E. Santo walked more than 600 kilometres to fully immerse herself in the surrounding landscape. Along the way, she photographed the landscape and listened to hundreds of testimonies recorded in the Dordogne valley by anthropologist Armelle Faure, in order to understand the lives of the women, men and children who grew up in this valley, where five dams built between 1932 and 1957 submerged numerous villages and displaced hundreds of families.

Linked by their fate, the two villages still share a coincidence. The elders of Nauzenac and Ubaye gather every 22 July at the edge of the reservoirs, at the location closest to their submerged village, to celebrate Mary Magdalene, patron saint of both villages, whose chapels were also flooded when the dams were filled in 1945 and 1960.

To honour this votive occasion and link the destinies of the inhabitants of here and there, whose fates were shared, the author, while walking and inscribing her body in the landscapes she crossed, carried the memory of the elders of the Dordogne valley to those of the Ubaye valley. In her daily practice of walking and listening, she noted in a notebook the passages from the oral archives that struck her, as well as the images evoked by the encounter between the landscapes she traversed and the stories she heard. Once she arrived in Ubaye, she offered her writings to the inhabitants.

This book recounts the experiment of a sensitive territorialisation which, through the intimate relationship woven between memory, space and walking, gave substance to the words of the former inhabitants of the area, thus inscribing them in the landscape they had travelled through.
